Ashoura: Lessons of LeadershipA day of victory is remembered today. Victory of Truth against Falesehood, of the Weak against the Strong, of those who are with Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) against those who are with Shaytaan.

On this day, the 10th of Muharram, Prophet Musa – Moses – (Peace be upon him) was saved from Pharaoh. This was nothing short of a miracle, to the extent that the people of Musa could hardly believe it until Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) made the body of Pharaoh reach the shores and they confirmed he was dead.

I want to pick one element of this story which I believe is a key lesson for all of us to learn from, and that is the certainty of Musa (Peace be upon him) in the victory of Allah.

Imagine this scenario: Musa and his  people (at least 1000 people) with women and children are running away from certain death from the biggest oppressor of their time, and he’s running with them towards the sea. His people are asking him “where are you taking us Musa?! Why aren’t we going north towards Palestine and Syria?” Musa replies, “This is what I’ve been commanded”. They reach the sea and it’s a dead end. They can neither advance nor can they retreat or change direction. To make matters worse, they see the massive army of Pharaoh filling the horizon and ready to charge!

Imagine you’re Musa at that time; thousands of people crying out at your feet “Musa! Musa! Where have you taken us?! They are going to kill us!” Women and children crying, what would you say? How would you respond?… just imagine those moments and put yourself in that situation. Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) described this situation in the Quran, He said:

“And when the two hosts saw each other, the companions of Musa (Moses) said: “We are sure to be overtaken.” (Quran, Ash-Shuara, Chapter 26, Verse 61)

But how did Musa respond?

“[Musa (Moses)] said: “Nay, verily with me is my Lord. He will guide me.” (Quran, Ash-Shuara, Chapter 26, Verse 62)

Immediately after this proclamation of certainty, what happens?

“Then We revealed to Musa (Moses) (saying): “Strike the sea with your stick.” And it parted, and each separate part (of that sea water) became like huge mountain.
Then We brought near the others [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) party] to that place.
and We saved Musa (Moses) and all those with him.
Then We drowned the others.”
(Quran, Ash-Shuara Chapter 26, Verses 63-66)

One man’s certainty of His Lord’s victory saved the thousands of doubters who are with him from certain death. There’s an important leadership lesson here from an individual perspective as well as Ummah perspective: From an individual perspective, and if you’re a leader, the lesson above show that if you believe in something, and you’re acting out of true certainty that it’ll help reach you and your organisation to the “promised land” then you should stand firm against the doubts of the doubters and proceed. Leadership takes courage, and it takes a leap of faith to step into the unknown, but it has to be done otherwise you face the end of your organisation or team. This is not to say that you shouldn’t listen to your team members or that you should cross every dangerous terriorty, but this says that if you’ve done your research, you can see where you’re going, and as a Muslim you’ve prayed istikhara, made dua, and have sincere intentions than have that certainty. There’s nothing like indecision and doubt that kills a leader and kills an organisation.

From an Ummah perspective, the lessons of this day, and perhaps the reason why Prophet Mohammed (Peace be upon him) asked us to fast this day in order to contemplate this lesson is that we should be sure of Allah’s victory for this Ummah, and we should be optimistic against all odds. A ProductiveMuslim never quits and he/she never gives up, he doesn’t listen to the 1000s of media channels that depress you and tell you how weak the Muslim Ummah is but he/she looks for signs of hope and inspiration and firmly believes that “verily with me is my Lord. He will guide me.”

When talking about the lessons from 10th of Moharram or Ashura, one name that comes in mind more evidently is that of Imam Al-Hussain. His courage, his motivation, his unwavering trust in Allah swt (Tawaqaltu lillah), his firm decisiveness in his decision to stand against the evil despite all odds against him…and his victory of truth against falsehood by sacrificing his life. It would have been more apt to discuss the life and martyrdom of Sayyidul Shababul ahlil Jannah (leader of the youth of paradise) as lessons from the day of Ashura instead of Prophet Moses (AS). Let us be the community that is open to learning from its history.

We deeply respect Imam Husain’s martyrdom,we honor his glorious act of sacrifice for the sake of Islam. He gave us a great example of truth, courage and piety. But we also feel pain and grief in our hearts for his assassination at the hand of some hypocrites who took Islam as a pretext to commit their crime. They fought and killed Allah’s Messenger’s beloved and blessed grandson and his family. This was the most heinous and shameful crime that was committed for the sake of political power. This tragic event took place in the year 61 AH or 680 CE. However, the tradition of `Ashura’ fasting is very ancient and it goes back to a long time before imam Husian.

It is reported in the Sahih of Imam Al-Bukhari and other authentic collections of hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram while they were in Makkah (before the hijrah).

It was a day on which people of Makkah used to change the covering (kiswah) of the Ka`bah. Quraysh also used to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari, hadith 1489 and 1760)

After the hijrah when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, he found that the Jews of Madinah also used to observe this day with fasting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them the reason of their fasting on this day. They said, “This is a blessed day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa fasted on this day giving thanks to Allah.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “We have more claim to Musa than you.” He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari, hadith 1865)

In another report it is mentioned that Jews of Madinah used to hold a feast on this day. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told his Companions to fast instead. (Al-Bukhari, hadith 1866)

`Ashura’ fasting was obligatory (fard) in the beginning. In the second year of hijrah (624 CE) when Allah’s command came that Muslims should fast the whole month of Ramadan, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then sent someone to announce to people that fasting of `Ashura’ had become voluntary (nafl). This indicates that whosoever wishes to fast, may fast and whosoever does not want to fast, there will be no blame on him/her.

Imam At-Tirmidhi mentioned that ibn `Abbas(may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say that we should fast on two days: the 9th and 10th of Muharram to distinguish ourselves from the Jewish community. (At-Tirmidhi)

Ibn`Abbasalso quoted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying, “If I live next year, I shall also fast on the 9th day.” (MusnadAhmad ibnHanbal, hadith2002)

There is a great reward in fasting the day of `Ashura’. There are many hadiths that mention its blessings and virtues. It is good to fast on this day, although it is not obligatory.

        Salam Aleiykom
With all due respects and without offence, a well known and educated muslim scholar has looked onto fasting on Ashura and has an entire lecture about the truth behind it. Whenever you have free time please listen to his lecture ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtd20xnxWNQ ). At the end of the lecture, there is a short majless about an event relating to Imam Hussain’s a.s matrydom, I hope it may enlighten you and influence you to learn more about his sacrifice to litterally save Islam.
Continue your excellent work on productivemuslim !

          Walaikum Assalam Sister Fatima,
After hearing some pieces of the lecture in the youtube link you provided, I came to know the following:
–> You follow the shia sect.
–> The person giving the lecture is a big lier. He is a lier because:
          1. He is saying that the greatest companions of the Prophet(SAWS) are liers!!! Nauthubillah!
          2. The companions he charged as lying are none but -
          1. Abu Hurairah (RA) 2. Ibn Abbas (RA) 3. Muawiya (RA) 4. Abu Musa Al Ashari (RA)
          3. If these companions are liers(nauthubillah!), then you cannot trust any of the books of hadith as they are the major contributors of Hadith next to A’aisha(RA).
          4. He says that the Hadith about Ashoura is mentioned in 6 Saheeh Books. But he is still claiming that this hadeeth is weak. By saying this, he is trying to point fingers at the great imams like Imam Al Bukhari, At -Timidhi etc..
          4. He says that Prophet(SAWS) instructed Muslims to fast on 9th and 10th of Muaharram on the 1st of Hijri, but the hadith of Ibn Abbas (RA) says that Prophet (SAWS) used to fast on 10th and said that If He was alive the following year, then He would fast on the 9th of Muharram as well to differentiate Muslims’s act of worship from the Jews. So, it cannot be 1st Hijri but it is actually the year when Prophet(SAWS) passed away which is 11th Hijri.
          5. He took the name of Ali(RA), Hassan(RA) and Hussain(RA) more number of times than Allah(SWT) and His Rasool(SAWS) name. Such an obsession with the Prophet’s family more than the Creator Allah(SWT) Himself is not an act that Prophet(SAWS) ever commanded.
          6. He is using logic to prove his point is correct but doesn’t understand that the Sahabah of the Prophet(SAWS) are the best of the generation. I am not saying that, the Prophet(SAWS) himself said that and Allah(SWT) said he is pleased with the companions of the Prophet(SAWS) in the Quran.

Finally, please visit the below link to listen to facts about 10th of Muharram.

          Salams,
          Abdullah.

          • Abdullah

Small correction. The speaker said 3 of the 6 sahih books talk about the fasting of Ashoura and not all 6 books. Further, read the Seerah of the Prophet(SAWS), the History of Sahabah and biographies of Imams like Al-Bukhari, Muslim Tirmidhi etc.

          • Fatima

            Bismillah Al Rahman Al Raheem
            Salam 3aleykom brother Abdullah
I wanted to point out that I’ve sent the message in order to spread the word to the website coordinator that he should speak about Imam Hussein a.s (english translation: may peace (salam) be upon him (aleyhe)), who should be loved by all Muslims for he is the grandson of the messenger of Allah swt (notice the difference between “sub7anahou wa ta3ala” and “aleyhe salam”), and that his tragic martyrdom should be spoken about at least on it’s anniversary, rather than being ignored and replaced by something else.
            Regarding your message,
1- I am a Muslim as much as you are, and I say “ash7adou ana la Ila7a Ila Allah wa Muhammadin an rassoul Allah” the same affection as you do.
2- You can say whatever statement about the lecturer as long as you have something supporting your claim. Unfortunately, you haven’t provided any evidence that the lecturer neither what he is saying are untrue
I don’t mean to begin a conflict within the Islamic sects. at all – I just wanted to clarify you about fasting on the 10th of Muharram, and to inform others about the martyrdom of Imam Hussein a.s by suggesting to have an article written about it on the website.
            Wasalam

JazakAllahu Khairan. This is very relevant for us, especially those who are in the company of not so practicing and believing Muslims. There’s a tendency to resort to unfair, often impatient means. I guess it makes life really simple when you decide to go for this free fall believing firmly that Allah is watching over us.

  • Nour

    Salam,

Just an important point that needs to be raised. When mentioning Ashura, mentioning the sacrifice of the Prophets (saws) beloved grandson, Imam Hussain. Without his sacrifice for the sake of Islam, the religion would not have survived the numerous attempts to corrupt and distort it.

    Thank you and wassalam

  • Ms. Fatimah Amatullah

Wow, mashaAllah. So deep and so true. May Allah help us to gain such certainty Ameen.

  • Hasni Abubakar

This story proves and convinced me that if you have faith in Allah…he will be there to help you . I cried when i read this story of Moses with his people while I imagine the situation that they were facing at that point when they were chased by the Firaun. I then imagine myself in similar situation. From now on I will always turn to Allah for help coz I belief Allah will always there for me.
