How to Wake up for Fajr?

How do you wake up for fajr? And I don’t mean wake up for a day or two, but how do you keep waking up for fajr, constantly, everyday, without fail.

There’s loads & loads of websites online giving you tips and advice on how to wake up early. But our focus is not on worldly tips (which should be taken by all means, part of tying the camel ;)), our focus is on the spiritual means.

My dear brothers/sisters, every day when you read Surat Al-Fatiha, at least 17 times a day, you recite the verse “You Alone we Worship, and You Alone we Seek Help from”: You want to worship Allah? “Yes!” You need His help then. You want to wake up for Fajr? “Yes please!” Guess what, you need Allah. You cannot, I repeat, cannot, wake up for fajr without Allah’s help. Now ask yourself the question, what can I do to show Allah that I truly and utterly want to wake up for fajr?!

Have you ever had days when you’re about to go to sleep, and you have this deep feeling that you’ll definitely wake up for fajr? And have you ever had days when you know for certain that you’ll oversleep? Imagine the two scenarios, which I’m sure some of us have gone through:

Scenario 1:

You feel high with Eman, you’ve prayed your witr, read some Quran, and even though you’ve got 2 hours to sleep till fajr, you’re certain you’ll wake up because you’ve set your mind, heart and body to make sure you wake up. In fact, sometimes you keep on waking in the middle of the night thinking it’s fajr time out of fear that you’re going to miss it. If you haven’t experienced this, think of a time when you had to catch an early flight or a bus/train, and think of how your mind, heart and body were switched on, and it doesn’t matter what time you slept, you’ll wake up.

Scenario 2:

There are days when deep down you really don’t want to wake up, you hope that you “oversleep” so you feel less guilty about it, and Allah may have mercy upon you and still wake you up, and that’s when the battle with the snooze alarm starts and the classic shaytaan trick “just 5 more minutes…” begins.

How do we maintain scenario 1 everyday?

With these 2 scenarios, one details a feeling deep down inside that you’re definitely waking up, and another where you know you won’t wake up because deep down inside you don’t want to and you’re not ready to take the fight against shaytaan of waking up in the morning.

Below I detail some practical and spiritual tools, that will help you in achieving scenario 1 all the time inshaAllah:

Spiritual Tools

  • Know who Allah is: This is the key and number one tool to waking up for Fajr. If you know Who you’re worshipping, and you know that He requests that you get up in the morning and pray to Him, you’ll wake up. It’s our lack of understanding of who Allah is that makes us slump into scenario 2 all the time. Know your Lord, that’s key.
  • Sincerity: Be sincere about waking up for fajr, don’t just say to yourself: “InshaAllah, it’ll be nice if I wake up for fajr” be sincere about it, and say: “I will wake up for fajr” I find it useful sometimes to talk to myself about it before going to sleep and say: “I will wake up for fajr, i don’t care how, but I’ll definitely will!”
  • Wudu before sleep: Ibn Abbas reported that Allah’s Messenger said: “Purify these bodies and Allah will purify you, for there is no slave who goes to sleep in a state of purity but an Angel spends the night with him, and every time he turns over, [the Angel] says, ‘O Allah! Forgive Your slave, for he went to bed in a state of purity.” Do you think that such a person would be left to oversleep and miss fajr?
  • Witr Prayer + Dua: Make sure you don’t sleep before performing your witr prayer, and supplicate to Allah during your Witr prayer to help you wake up for Fajr, remember, “You Alone we Worship, and You Alone we Seek help from”
  • Read some Quran: Ending the day with verses of the Noble Quran will sure put your focus straight on waking up for salaat. Prophet Muhammad used to recommend that we recite Surat Al-Sajdah, and Surat Al-Mulk (Chapters 32 and 67) before going to sleep.
  • Remember Allah before you go to Sleep: This is part of the first point I made, and you can find all the supplications you need to recite before going to sleep here. You might need to print them off and read them off paper at first, but within a week or two you should be able to memorize them fully and just recite them before dozing off.
  • Remember the rewards attached to Fajr Salaat: from being safe from being a hypocrite, to having light on the day of judgement, to being under Allah’s protection the whole day, to having laziness removed from us that day and being productive. Remember these rewards and you’ll sure wake up.

Other tools I use that help me a lot:

Ask a friend/family member to wake you up: This is the number one rule for me to wake up. Get a family, friend, spouse to wake up, and help each other, if you get up before them, don’t be selfish and make sure they are awake too.

  • 1.5 hours sleep rule: Aaaah.. here’s a secret trick, there’s a theory in the Sleep science that says that every human being completes an entire sleep cycle in 1.5 hours, therefore, if you can wake up at the end of a multiple of 1.5 hours (e.g. 1.5 hours, or 3 hours, or 4.5 hours..etc) you’ll wake up fresh and rejuvenated. Otherwise, you’ll wake up lazy. So if fajr is at 5am, and you sleep at 12am, make sure you set your alarm at 4.30am, because that gives you 4.5 hours to sleep. (Of course, if you take 1/2 an hour to fall to sleep, you might need to add that into your calculation).
  • Nap in the afternoon: Another lifehack, taken from the Sunnah and recommended by many, make sure you nap in the afternoon, for just 20 minutes! yup, just 20 minutes. Trust me, for the past 3 years, I’ve mastered the 20 min nap, and everytime it never fails to rejuvenate me. If you need to train yourself to nap for that long, I highly recommend www.pzizz.com, a wonderful software that trains you for these short naps, it’s what I used to train myself.
  • Promise yourself a grand breakfast if you wake up for Fajr: I’m a breakfast guy, so if I wake up early, I sure like to have a big breakfast. Sometimes i look forward to my breakfast from the afternoon before, and just like a small reward, treat yourself to a massive breakfast in the morning. It’ll definitely set your day straight as well inshaAllah.

Well, that’s all I can think of. If you think of new ideas, or you have other ways to wake up for fajr and hence keep up your productivity boost, give me a shout in the comments section below!

    Assalamu alaikum from Uzbekistan.

I was looking for sources that look at self-improvement from Islamic perspective. Eventhough, our Deen is based on constant self-improvement, with the matter of time, we lost that spirit of constant greater jihhad, alas. Thanks for your efforts to bring that spirit back to our ummah.

also, another tip to wake up for Fajr that I read was to put your alarm clock across the room! because then if it rings, you will wake up for sure (to turn it off) but by that time, u’ll be out of bed!

      QURAN AND PRODUCTIVITY
      Proactivity of the Yaseen Man

“And there came a man running from the farthest part of the town. He said: “O my people! Obey the Messengers”.
“Obey those who ask no wages of you (for themselves), and who are rightly guided”.
“And why should I not worship Him (Allah Alone) Who has created me and to Whom you shall be returned?”
“Shall I take besides Him alihah (gods)? If the Most Gracious (Allah) intends me any harm, their intercession will be of no use for me whatsoever, nor can they save me.”
“Then verily, I should be in plain error”.
“Verily! I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me!”.
It was said (to him when the disbelievers killed him): “Enter Paradise.” He said: “Would that my people knew”.
“That my Lord (Allah) has forgiven me, and made me of the honoured ones!”.
      (Surat Yaseen – Chapter 36, Verses 20-27)

The verses above show the proactive nature that every ProductiveMuslim should have in giving dawah to people. Here’s a man (we call him the Yaseen man because the story is mentioned in Surat Yaseen), who had no need to go and proclaim his faith to his people; he could have easily sat at home, comfortably believing in Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) and letting the Messengers deal with the people. But he came running from the farthest part of town and started giving dawah. And what’s more amazing, after they killed him, and he was given Paradise, he still remembered them and said: “if only my people would know”.

Such proactivity is missing in many Muslims these days. We’re happy to sit comfortably in our homes and never proclaim our faith to anyone nor perform any action which would have lasting social impact. We claim to be ‘peaceful’ people, yet what sort of people do not care of the eternal peace of their neighbours nor invite them to the beauty of Islam? Or don’t strive hard and work tirelessly to take care of the poor, the orphans and the widows?

As ProductiveMuslims, we should develop a sense of proactivity and leave a social impact to those around us; this sense that it’s your responsibility to call your people, your neighbours, your society to all that’s good, including the message of Islam. Yes, it wouldn’t be easy. Perhaps you will get hurt along the way. But life’s too short to live a fearful and inactive life. The Yaseen-man knew he would probably get killed, but he weighed his options and chose to do the best action – to seek the pleasure of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala).

      SEERAH AND PRODUCTIVITY
      Two Types of Proactivity

It is narrated by al-Mughira that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) used to stand (in the salah) or perform salah until both his feet or legs swelled. He was asked why (he offered such an unbearable salah). He replied: “Should I not be a thankful slave (to Allah)?” [Bukhari]

People tend to be productive for 2 different reasons:
      1. Some are productive because they have to, E.g. being productive at work so you won’t lose your job, being productive at school/uni so you won’t fail.
      2. Others are productive out of thankfulness.

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) was productive for the latter reason. He was a thankful slave of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) and his gratitude drove him to be productive in every aspect of his life.

When you’re productive because you have to, it will only get you so far, and eventually you won’t be able to continue as you may lose focus or grow tired of pushing yourself. But when you’re productive out of thankfulness to Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) for all the blessings He bestowed upon you, it’s as if you have a burning fire within you that’s constantly fueling you to stay productive in anything you do. Whether it’s worship, work, family, or working in your community, you’ll constantly want to give your best and nothing short of excellence as a slave of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) like the Prophet (Peace be upon him) used to do.

      PRODUCTIVE ANCESTORS

Productivity Lessons from Ibn al-Jawzi (may Allah have mercy on him)

It is said that the best use of time and way to draw closer to Allah is through seeking knowledge. Of the prominent scholars who displayed such excellence in the pursuit of knowledge was Imam Abu’l-Faraj ibn al-Jawzi, he was born in 508AH and died in 597AH. He lived for 89 years and wrote over five hundred books.

Here is some of Ibn al-Jawzi’s biography in order to perceive how he was very aware of time and its value. He, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote in one of his books: ‘One must know the value of his time and its great importance, so that he should not waste even one moment except in worship, and should use it for the best, in order of priority, in speech and action. One’s intention to seek goodness must ever be present, with no slackness, as much as the body is able to bear, for as the hadith says: “The intention of the believer is better than his action”. [Al-Tabarani] (1)

Our productive predecessors highlight that most people nowadays waste time in useless matters. Only the successful realise the nobleness of time; Ibn al-Jawzi (rah) said: “I saw many people who do not know the true meaning of life. For there are those who have been blessed by Allah by being rich and not needing to work, and you find them sitting in the markets most of the day looking at people, watching many an evil thing. Some of them play chess, others pass their time telling stories..”

“I discovered that Allah, Glorified be He, did not guide people to the realisation of the nobleness of time and the importance of times of health, except the successful ones whom He blessed and guided, And no one will be granted such goodness except persons of the greatest fortune.”
[Excerpt from ‘The Value of Time’ p 32-34]

      Lessons:

      1. Reflect on your purpose in life
      2. Be grateful for good health
      3. Make dua for Allah to bless your time
      4. Minimise time spent in social gatherings
      5. Leave irrelevant matters

      (1) Noted as a weak hadith.

Increasing Productivity: Lesson No. 2- Noble Company
      Dec 10, 2010 11:55 pm | ProductiveMuslim

A few days ago, I participated in a charity fundraiser, the 841 Challenge,
part of a campaign to raise £25,000 for Mercy Mission. The mission was very
simple, to try and cross 8 European countries within 4 days. The time flew,
as did our shuttle, as we managed to get across 8 European countries within
the time set, through great team work, and pretty much keeping the car
      running most of the time.

The trip was a great success, not because we successfully completed the
trial, not because we raised thousands of pounds for charity, not because we
planned out the biggest project Mercy Mission will launch in 2011
insha’Allah through this, but because I matured my understanding of the
      importance of relationships.

When I went about setting myself a challenge to raise money for the
charitable organisation I live my life with, Mercy Mission, I had a couple
of people who emerged immediately, as people eager to help. And help they
have. From the point of concept to delivery, they have been critical in
ensuring that the objectives have been realised, and insha’Allah this will
be written in their scale of good deeds.

      Allah Subhanhu wa Ta’ala says:

_”Cooperate in righteousness and God-consciousness”. [Quran 5:2]_

And to be honest, Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) has blessed me over the last
ten years to meet the people who apply this verse in their lives, and the
two I have taken the trip with just solidified my already concrete faith in
      this.

As we look to get more from our day, time, existence, it is of paramount
importance that we both recognize and actively seek out those relationships
which will allow us to be more productive. Our individual contribution to
humanity will never be optimized without the right company, and therefore,
we need to actively build and mature the nobility of our company.

The brothers I have taken my trip with, have humbled me with their
sincerity, generosity, and commitment to the greater good in the face of
adversity. Their company has been a privilege and even as I write this, I
reflect on how I would not have been able to entertain this challenge if
Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) not blessed me with their company. The Messenger
of Allah (peace be upon him) has said: “Allâh supports His slave as long as
the slave is supportive of his brother.” [Muslim]

And this came through every moment of the trip, both before and during. The
trip had some very difficult times, as I assure you driving through the Alps
in the winter is difficult enough, let alone at night, in freezing
temperatures, with limited visibility. Having a solid co-driver made the
      difference.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The believer to the believer is like
a solid building, one part supports the other.” [Bukhari & Muslim]. And he
interlaced his fingers to demonstrate this. I assure you, when sleep was
trying to make us pull up and stop, and potentially compromise the ability
to succeed, it was the team spirit that kept our morale high, and at times
      RedBull too (!)

Therefore, the point to consider here is, does the company you keep add
value to your life now and your hereafter? Does the company you keep remind
you of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala)? Does the company you keep call you to
good deeds? All these are questions we need to consider, and the some of the
criteria with which we should measure each contact in our phone book
against. If you are with people that are competing for good, you will find
you are inclined to doing a greater amount of good, and vice versa. This is
why we find we are ‘on the religion of our companions’, and thus those
around us can have a profound impact on our lives.

One of the companions (may Allah be pleased with him) famously shared with
the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), how in his company his emaan was
so high and his desire for good, however when away from our beloved his
state was different. And ultimately to a lesser degree we as individuals
will all have this, that when we are with noble company, we have a greater
desire to do good and concerted effort to stay away from satanic whisper.
This is natural, but also is something we should use in our favor, and make
our friends from the noble people, and build our productivity with other
      people who call to goodness.

      Race Towards Good Deeds
      Dec 13, 2010 11:49 pm | ProductiveMuslim

A neighbour of mine had a knee operation about a month ago, and for a month
I’ve been telling myself to go visit him. Everyday I delayed it till the
next day, and never got around it. Last week, I made the utmost preparation
to go see him and I told myself “No excuses! I have to visit this
brother.” I go pray Maghreb planning to see him after salah and subhanaAllah
      – there he was in the mosque before me with the rest of the brothers feeling
      better and able to walk.

      _May Allah forgive me_

I felt so bad, and couldn’t stop rebuking myself for missing such a huge
reward and opportunity to visit a neighbour, a Muslim brother, in his time
of need. I remembered the Hadeeth Qudsi where Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala)
would say to a person on the Day of Judgement: “O son of Adam I was sick and
you did not visit Me. He would say: O my Lord; how could I visit You and You
are the Lord of the worlds? Thereupon He would say: Didn’t you know that
such and such servant of Mine was sick but you did not visit him and were
you not aware that if you had visited him, you would have found Me by
      him?” (Muslim).

      _May Allah forgive me_

Sometimes we keep putting off good deeds, and delay performing them but can
any of us guarantee we have tomorrow? I remembered the hadeeth of the
Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) which promised great reward for someone
visiting the sick, He (Peace be upon him) said: “There is not a Muslim that
visits another in the morning except that 70,000 angels ask forgiveness for
him until the night, and if he visits him at night then 70,000 angels ask
forgiveness for him until the morning, and he will have earned a garden in
      paradise” (At-Tirmidhi).

      _May Allah forgive me_

Reflecting deeply on the failure to hasten towards good deeds on this
occasion, I remembered the hadeeth, where the caller of heaven would say to
the person visiting the sick: “You have done well and your walk was good
also, and you have earned a place in paradise” (At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah).
So why do we still not run towards opportunities to do good deeds presented
      before us?

      _May Allah forgive me_

Brothers and sisters, the most important lesson to take away is that we
should not delay, and hasten towards good deeds.

Allah says in the Quran: “Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your
Lord, and for a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and
of the earth, prepared for the righteous” (Al-Imran, Chapter #3, Verse
#133). We should not forget that our brothers and sisters in Islam have
rights over us, and there should be no excuses to seek those good deeds out.
You might have a busy life, but if you want to know what true productivity
means in Islam, it’s making sure that you do not miss these
“opportunities” and “golden” moments to be with your brother and sister in
their time of need. Ultimately it might be an act which saves you in the
Hereafter. Make time for them and Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) will reward
you, bless you, and make time for you inshaAllah.

I hope that this message to race towards good deeds reaches you and and that
it becomes a mean for Allah to forgive me.

      TIP 1
Use an alarm which uses the adhan. Most people have mobile phones and can download it and set it as the alarm tone. The adhan will wake you up; giving you the best reminder and motivation, whilst at the same time maybe it’ll scare the shaytan/shayateen away (they start breaking wind and run off when they hear the actual adhan)

      TIP 2
Have 2 alarm clocks (or even 3!); put one next to you and the other(s) away from you in a different locations in the room. The final alarm is the loudest and still set well before fajr time expires, or congregation finishes. I use this strategy when I want to catch an important meeting, go travelling, esp. to catch a plane!

      TIP 3
Slowly train yourself to wake up with one alarm only (ideally with an adhan for its benefits).

      TIP 4
As soon as you hear the alarm, imagine yourself being set on fire and run to do wudhu to extinguish the fire away! Also think about how much reward you will gain. Most importantly, thank Allaah for reviving your life and giving you another day’s chance – there was no guarantee that you would ever wake up! Think of it like this – it was 50/50, and it will always be, as soon as you sleep – you may never wake up in this once in a lifetime dunya again! Try to imagine different things so as to vary your thoughts and not to get bored

      TIP 5
If you’re really struggling get up, get someone to sprinkle water on you to wake you up (there’s a hadith on this) – both spiritual and physical benefit – water extinguishes fire!

Mashallah Very helpful. I can vouch for some of your tips cause they are some of the ones I have been using since I started to really take the deen seriously alhamdillah and they work! If we make a sincere intention to Allah he will help out.

    I will share some cool feeling in the hopes of inspiring others inshallah;
I have also found it that if your consistant, you automaticly wake up and maybe it is the angels like you mentioned cause, the alarm has not gone off yet, but you wake up, It Feels SOOO good mashallah. Also I have had some creepy stuff happen too lol one time I was certain somebody brushed up against my blanket and I was completly asleep but when that happend I woke straight up and got ready for Fajr, kinda weird (there was nobody in the room) also anothe crazy instance was where something fell in my closet right before the alarm went off, I was sleeping and all of sudden, I hear that and get right up!!! Feeling very strange and sorta frightened lol but Alahmdillah it’s a blessing… Inshallah may Allah strength you and all of us to wake up for Fajr everyday.

I heard some non muslim say one time about the Eid prayer that “if the muslims flocked to Fajr prayer like the flock to the Eid prayer then we would have a serious problem”

mashallah ur website is awesome, innovative and very informative….may ALLAH (swt)reward all of u involved,,for ur sincere efforts in practicing and preaching Islam.
one point which i found very novel is that u tell us that we can wake up to pray fajr,no matter wat time we sleep.eye-opener point……coz many articles i read elsewhere always suggest that we shd sleep early to wake up early…and for a late sleeper like me,it seemed liked an impossible task…coz for ppl like me,it’s more difficult to sleep early than to wake up early…and many end up thinking and justifying that its not possible to pray fajr just coz our bodies r wired to sleep late…. but this advice of urs definitely proves that there’s just no excuse for missing fajr!!

    Tips from my experience:

Make the shdule for the next day ( what you will do after fazr ect until you sleep a night)

Make Dua to Allah (swt) to help you wake up

put the alarm away from your bed

after turning off the alarm go stright to the bathroom dont give time to yourself for thinking about going back to sleep.

and dont think about sleeping after fazr before sunrise ( i know it is hard but it will come with the pratice)

Why some people are more productive at night? They do work until late night that make them late to wake up for fajr. The common reason they give is they cannot do their work at day time, so they must do at night.

    Salam bro,
I really loved when u mentioned pzizz.com, I sooo long to get those short naps in the middle of the day to keep me going. but just checkd this pzizz thing and found out that they use music to calm u down to sleep. which version did u use? do they have one without music in it?

    • Anonymous

The way Pzizz works is that it uses an audio system that combines a number of sounds (some natural, some music) coupled with the narrator’s very soothing and calming voice…to create the calming natural effect and walk you through a nap/sleep routine. I used it for about a 2-3 months mainly to train my mind to get used to 20 minute naps and ever since I’ve been falling into 20min power naps effortlessly without Pzizz anymore, aH.

One more important point which I believe that should have been included in the article is to avoid doing any non-beneficial activity after Isha. By this I mean, things like watching news, reading newspaper, reading magazine, idle chatting, playing games, etc. Also, finish your dinner before Isha time which is also a Sunnah of our beloved messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallaam). This will help you to sleep early so that you can finish your 7-8 hours of sleep comfortably before Fajr and you will not have much difficulty getting up at Fajr time.

Mashallah, the article is enough of a guide, but here’s two more that I found on other sources besides these:

    1) Take Dinner Several Hours Before Going to Bed
    2) The Bed Should be Clean (this will help you sleep well. If there are unnecessary items/particles on your bed it will keep waking you up again and again all night)

Jazak Allah khair, Abu. On the site you can now download a Powernap audio for only $10… but then it’s just the same mp3 every time. If you want to use the software with the algorithms for a different experience every time, it’s $89. What do you suggest? :)

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Abu-Productive/1371363522 Abu Productive

I’ll be honest, the mp3 player is quite effective to “train your mind” to power nap. You’ll only need to use it for a month or two before you become a “natural” power-napper iA! As I mentioned above, I don’t use pzizz anymore because my mind is trained and I can effectively take 20m powernaps nowadays with just my alarm to wake me up in 20m.

          • Callista Ransom

Yayy! Good to know. I’ll get the powernap mp3 inshAllah. Jazak Allah khair!

To wakeup early i sleep early and place my mobile with alarm set on it far away from my bed so that when it will ring ill walk towards it to set if off and thats how i will be able to wakeup for tahajud Alhamdu-lillah!! Trusting on Allah plays major role in waking up for fajir or tahajud. We can ask ALLAH to wake us early for fajir and Alhamdu-lillah i always try this and i wakeup before my alaram rings lol .Another tip for waking up early is not to eat anything before going to sleep.

yeah,  AlHAMDULILLAH i also use the same technique of putting mobile with alarm at a far place …and Alhamdulillah it works :)

Thanks for sharing such productive tips, in such a structured format brother. I have always done the same with myself and it gave me such a boost in my iman as well as my regular life.

But i wanted to share with u that i have not been able to keep up the fight with myself and imagine and think about Allah and my deen with the same intensity since the last 2 years….
I had been quite a productive muslim since the time i had accepted islam and started to follow it around 7 years ago. i’d managed to fight with myself (and liked it) for 5 yrs., but i don’t know why my focus is diminishing. I still pray 5 times a day, but most of my fajr prayers are late. I’ve lost constancy in anything and due to this i’m not able to feel right.

Please share with us a strategy, in ur future blogs, to “keep it up” and have constant intensity/passion in our deen and duniya.

    JazakAllah Khair,
    Omar

  • reem

Thank you , it is a very important article .May Allah reward you benevolence

  • Macena

    Jazakallahukayr brother.

I have a very small, but effect tip:

***PUT YOUR ALARM CLOCK AS FAR AWAY FROM YOU AS POSSIBLE***

Why is this? Because, if you put it far away, you would have to physically get out of bed in order to turn it off. And by the time you’ve done that, you’re already 80% awake!
The whole problem with the fight with the alarm clock is the fact that far too many of us put it within reach, so this just makes Shaytaan’s job easier. He probably thinks ‘Oh these Children of Adam are so stupid, they make my job easy. Half of my job is done, so long as they put their alarm clocks near enough to turn off, whilst they are still in bed. Mwaa ha ha ha ha ha haaaaa.

So, keep your alarm on as loud as possible, and keep it as far away from you as possible. Minimum distance from your bed should be 1.5 meters.
I always keep mine 2.5 meters away from me, and Alhumdulillah, I have been able to wake up for Fajr successfully every time.

  • Zaid

Jazakallahukhair for the tools and reminders, may Allah add it to your scale of good deeds. One little thing I’d like to add is regarding the sleep cycle. It could be from 1 1/2 hrs – 2 hrs. The average person generally has 4 cycles per night/day or 7-8hrs of total sleep. Great advice on the nap, it’s more beneficial than any energy/caffeine drink, unless you combine the two (it takes time for the drink to kick in so when you awake from the nap, you’ll have even more of an extra boost) ;) Here is a great article on napping, hope it helps insh’allah :D

Assalamu’alaikum.. A teacher of mine advised me to pray to Allah and in the name of The Almighty, ask the angles that are incharge of writing down our deeds to wake me up at a certain time the next day. I do this before i went to sleep.. Its very effective.. (well, to me it is.. I hardly need the alarm to wake me up)

  • Salim patel

Mashallah good article, and Inshallah so much reward for the writer if he inspires many to wake up!

  • Ykahmed

I used to have the clock radio on an islamic frequency on the other end of the room not next to my bed, so when Fajr time came I used to wake up to Islamic nasheeds to get me into the mood, and I had to physically get out of bed to turn it off. It worked, I had totally forgotten about it until I read your article. I learnt so much just by listening to the morning islamic programmes, they were very uplifting.

  • Halimamann

    Assalam alaikum,
A friend once told me to recite the last five verses of suratul khaf before going to bed, then focus my mind on the time i desire to wake up and insha Allah i’ll wake up at that particular time.I’v not tried it cos Alhamdulillah  my alarm has never disappointed me. Someone out there try it and lets have a feedback.

      Dear Sister,

We pray that Inshaa Allah you will be able to sort your schedule out properly, but do make sure to go through a hadeeth of our beloved Prophet (PBUH) about 4 things that get a person sick/ troubled, 1.EXCESSIVE SLEEPING 2. TALKING ALOT 3. EXCESSIVE EATING & 4. ALOT OF SOCIALIZING. I mean if you keep this as an objective that you need to achieve in order to comply to what our Prophet (SAW) had to say for an average good muslim, tust me you will get them all out of your body and lifestyle…Hope i was able to explain abit to u! Ma3aslama & Jazakallah Khair!

It’s a very useful article masha’Allah, but do you know how to modify pzizz so that we don’t have to hear the music? After all, regardless how much it helps, music is music and music is haraam. I used to fall asleep listening to the Qur’an but… I’m not sure if this is a good thing.

Elhamdullah, my main problem is NOT in waking up for Fajr but it’s about staying up after Fajr for the rest of the day …. would you please give us an idea of HOW to STAY up after the Fajr prayer to invest the early hours of the day.

Jazak Allah khair – wonderful article.

A tip from me is to place your alarm where you can not hit the snooze button… then you have to get our of bed to turn it off. Another tip is to say the istiadha and spit to the left upon waking.

to wake up early, one of alternative way is make your day full with activities, so that you will feel tired after that, and at the night, you can sleep earlier and keep tight. that’s one of solution

If all above fails, try the following:
Promise Allah before sleeping that you will do your best to wake up early to say your morning prayer on time and seek His help to keep your promise.
This has always worked for me without fail. Alhamdulliah.

I find having a very ‘effective’ alarm clock works. Either put it on the other side of your room or get one of those alarm clocks that run around.
Also on an islamic note, I always found making the ‘niyyah,’ the intention before you sleep to wake up for fajr the most effective :)

Seems like a good website with a unique focus on the daily lives of Muslims. This is my first time here and I have been here for only 15 minutes. What I like about the website is that it provides practical tips for being an active and a practicing Muslim without having to read plenty of books, or browse a thousand websites. (I don’t mean reading and researching is bad, it’s just sometimes you want to simply get to the point!)

If you have an iPhone, use this app called Sleep Cycle. It wakes you up during your light sleep cycle. Works great for me.

  • Emranhassan786

Jazakallah khair for this, this should be useful inshallah! Though, you advice not to sleep before Witr, but isn’t Witr best prayed latest? I remember reading that it’s best to read Qiyam-ul-Layl/Tajjahud in the last 1/3 of the night. So between Isha and that last 1/3 of the night, you sleep, then wake up and pray, and then end with Witr. Then sleep again until it’s time for Fajr.

  • Danial

I have to admit, i rarely am able to wake up early for fajr. One day, i even woke up early, and knew it was Subuh, but fell back asleep! :( Nauzdubillah. Later when i awoke, i felt very very guilty. I knew I had to do something about it. So i decided to fast that day. But not just fasting against food, and other things, but also to control my nafsu. I figured, oversleeping in the morning is definitley partly due to my nafsu, listening to shaytan’s whispers. And the Prophet said, the best way to control your nafsu is to fast. So i fasted. And Alhamdulillah, i found myself waking up the next day, very early in the morning. I looked at my clock, it was around the time of Fajr. So I got up and prayed Subuh. Suddenly while i was praying, i heard the Azan of Fajr from the nearby Mosque. Confused, i broke my solat, and checked my roommates’ clock. Turns out, my clock was early by 20 minutes, and it had actually just entered the time of Fajr. I sat there and listened to the Azan… “Asolatu khairu minannaum”. “Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep”. I smiled, and wept. Afterwards, i performed my Fajr at the mosque, alhamdulillah. Subhannallah, when you really ask for it, Allah grants it for you :’)

What about people who suffer from sleeping sisorders? I suffer from mild Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder, meaning my sleep rhythm begins at a socially unacceptable hour (usually between 2-2.30am). While I do get up for work at 8 am, I don’t feel rested. And getting up for Fajr is a daily battle with hits and misses. I make up the lost sleep on weekends, as is the norm for anybody who loses sleep regularly. So for me it’s a shameful but genuine issue, most days I know I won’t make it though some days miraculously I do!

  • http://www.facebook.com/AbdulAhadJeddahwi Abdul Ahad

As Salaamu Alaikum, Jazaak Allahu Khairan for sharing these tips.

I would like to add these…
THE MOST RICHEST PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD ARE The ONES who pray the two Rak’ahs before Fajr:
“The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)

‘A’isha (R.A) reported Allah’s Messenger as saying: The two rak’ahs at
dawn (Before Fajr) are better than this world and what it contains.
    Sahih Muslim Book # 004, Hadith # 1573

    Still wanna keep sleeping ?

Ibn al-Qayyim (May Allah have mercy on him) said:
There was consensus among the Sahaabah and we will quote what they said:

We have mentioned the words of Ibn Mas’ood above: “I saw us (at the
time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)) and no
one stayed behind from these prayers except a hypocrite who was known
    for his hypocrisy.”

The importance of it is such that…

‘A’isha (R.A) reported: I have never seen the Messenger of Allah
(may peace be upon him) hastening as much in observing supererogatory as
two rak’ahs before the (Fard) of the dawn prayer (Fajr).
    Sahih Muslim Book # 004, Hadith #1572:

So once we know of this hadith, Insha Allah we will never miss the Fajr Salaah and the 2 Sunnah Rakahs before Fajr :)

May Allah make us steadfast in offering all the Salaah on its fixed times !

  • Azam

They forgot to mention the no brainer i.e. TO SLEEP EARLY (soon after ‘Isha). Nothing can beat this “tool”, not just for waking up for Fajr but most likely, even making it for Tahajjud. Shaitan has convinced us that somehow there are more than 60 minutes per hour at night than in the morning :-) Why can’t we do everything we stay awake doing at night–in the morning?

assalamualaikum warahmatull, I just wanted to share a useful website that really helps me get enough sleep (so I can wake up for fajr on time insha Allah and feel rested!). It is the same idea as the 1.5 hour sleep cycle but it maps it out for you, i.e if I have to wake up at 4 am for tahajjud salah then it tells me:
You should try to fall asleep at one of the following times:7:00 PM or 8:30 PM or 10:00 PM or 11:30 PMSo this is a great program and I highly recommend it!

I liked the idea of Promise yourself a grand breakfast if you wake up for Fajr, I think it can work for me, but I don’t have idea what kind of breakfast is that? usually I just have serial and eggs for breakfast, and I don’t really have any appetite in the morning, but I like good food! :)

How can I fit a afternoon nap in this situation?
